SPUD Patrol meeting and Potato Distribution

S.P.U.D. Patrol (Serving Potatoes to Unrecognized Devas) of Asheville will be having an informational meeting at Firestorm Cafe (48 Commerce St.) on Thursday from six until seven pm in preparation for their monthly distribution of home-baked foil-wrapped potatoes on Saturday, January 30th in Pritchard Park starting at Noon. According to an email sent by Chuck Hunner, Asheville’s S.P.U.D. Patrol co-coordinator, Thursday’s meeting will be primarily informational, covering what S.P.U.D. Patrol does and organizing Saturday’s event.

S.P.U.D. Patrol was founded unofficially in Santa Cruz, CA in 1977 by Jeffrey Armstrong (recently interviewed on local radio station Virato Live!) when he started baking potatoes with fixings for people who were homeless as alternative to giving out money. After moving to Vancouver, SPUD patrol was re-started in 1996 by Jeffrey and his partner, and soon gained a greater following there, spreading to Nanaimo, Victoria, and recently Asheville. SPUD Patrol seeks to serve potatoes each month at Noon on the Saturday nearest to the full moon.

SPUD patrol of Asheville, founded by Chuck and Annette Hunner, started distributing potatoes in September of 2009 and plans to continue doing so well into 2010 (for a complete list of dates, see the website).
