On Saturday February 5th, the youth group from Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville will be getting up early to take a highly anticipated road trip. However, they are not headed to Miami for the game, but a little bit closer to home, Asheville, to participate in what they are calling the “Souperbowl Blitz” to help feed people who are homeless a good breakfast.
Joining with the “Least of These” Ministry (LOT), about fifteen young adults from Grace Lutheran will be serving breakfast starting at 8:00 am from the parking lot of Asheville Cornerstone Church, located at the corner of Patton Ave. and French Broad Ave. LOT serves a Saturday breakfast weekly of pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon and grits with plenty of hot coffee and orange juice. In addition to the food, the youth group will be handing out blankets and socks collected from church members.
Izzy Rodriguez, Youth and Young Adult Ministry Director at Grace Lutheran, said of the event, “The purpose of the ‘Blitz’ on Saturday is to give students face to face interaction with the less fortunate. When we look people in the eyes, it’s easier to see that God is moving in the lives of those we serve.”
The Souperbowl Blitz Saturday is part of Grace Lutheran’s larger participation in the national Souper Bowl of Caring weekend, which seeks to “be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat” even as people are enjoying the National Football League’s Super Bowl in Miami. According to Rodriguez, Grace Lutheran has been participating in Souper Bowl of Caring for seven years, and it has remained a youth driven ministry. In addition to the breakfast, the youth group has been conducting a soup can drive, the proceeds of which will be donated to the Hendersonville Rescue Mission and the Interfaith Assistance Ministry.
“With our ministries we try to understand that we are blessed to be a blessing according to our faith tradition. So as we receive, we must also give,” said Rodriguez.
